How long have you been in business?
Goodwin House Alexandria opened in 1967!
What is your primary product or service?
Goodwin House is a community for older adults offering Residential Living, Assisted Living, Memory Support and 24- Nursing programs. Over 30 different apartment styles and sizes offer something for everyone. The philosophy of service is to offer engaging programs and a full array of amenities for older adults who want to maintain their health and experience all life can offer, while knowing additional care is available as their needs change.
How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
The idea behind Goodwin House began when the Episcopal Church in the Diocese of Virginia acquired its first home for older adults in Richmond in the 1950s.
Inspired by how the Richmond home benefited its first residents, Allen Adams, a layman from Arlington serving on the home’s management committee, had the vision and tenacity to help to create a similar haven in Northern Virginia. His friend, Benjamin M. Smith, a Methodist layman, donated a generous piece of land in 1963 to build the first Goodwin House in Alexandria. Goodwin House was unusual for its day in being one of the first purpose-built continuing care communities in the country.
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
Goodwin House is one of few Life-plan Communities that offers an Extensive Financial Model, as well as other refundable financial plans. It also has a plan that was specifically designed to work well for individuals who already have Long-term Care Insurance.

Goodwin House currently has locations in Alexandria and Bailey's Crossroads, as well as a program that offers Lifecare to individuals living in their own Homes, which is known as Goodwin House at Home.
